Not their night: Adam Lind, Travis d'Arnaud and Jonathan Diaz had three hits and Ricardo Nanita drove in three runs as the Las Vegas 51s opened a four-game series at Chukchansi Park by downing the Fresno Grizzlies 9-6 on Thursday night. It was the fifth straight loss in a series opener for the Grizzlies, who are now tied with Sacramento for the division lead.
Walking wounded: It's been a tough stretch on the health front for the Grizzlies. OF Justin Christian, already nursing a sore back, was held out of the lineup after getting drilled in the ribs Tuesday night. RH Heath Hembree came down with strep throat Saturday night and said he lost 8 pounds. That doesn't include OF Roger Kieschnick, out 4-6 weeks with a hairline fracture in his left shoulder after slamming into an outfield wall during the series in Sacramento, or disabled pitchers Andrew Kown (forearm) and Matt Yourkin (turf toe).
Teeing it up: Most Grizzlies players and coaches spent their rare off day Wednesday playing at the team's inaugural golf tournament at Copper River Country Club.
On the move: Visalia native Chris Schwinden, at one time scheduled to start today's game for Las Vegas, was waived by the Toronto Blue Jays on Wednesday and claimed almost immediately by the Cleveland Indians. Schwinden was then assigned to Triple-A Columbus, joining former Golden West High teammate Beau Mills and Buchanan High product Jason Donald.
TV time: Comcast Hometown Network televised Thursday's game and also will do so today and Saturday.
Up next: The series continues at 7:05 p.m. today with Grizzlies LH Brian Burres (4-4, 5.78) scheduled to face 51s RH Jesse Chavez (6-2, 3.72).
