Poway High defensive end Brian Guendling put together a monster season and on Saturday night he happily confirmed that he verbally committed to the University of Nevada.
âI am so excited about it,â said the 6-foot-4, 220-pound sack artist. âIt is a great place to go. It is hot nine months out of the year and itâs close to home. Lake Tahoe is right there so I can go tubing with the boys. I am just so excited.â
Guendling, the Defensive Player of the Year in the Palomar League, will likely red shirt next season and bulk up before making his debut as the rushing defensive end for the Wolf Pack. Guendling was a force rushing the quarterback for the Titans, as he registered a school-record 15 sacks his senior year.
âI love defensive end and I love rushing the quarterback,â he said. âThey will have me at the rush end and that is just pure rushing the quarterback; and that is my passion. I canât wait.â
Guendling led a Titans defense that dominated every opponent it faced this season. Poway won its first CIF San Diego Section Division I crown since 2007, shutting out Vista 56-0 in the championship game.
Guendling also received offers from New Mexico State and the University of Idaho. But the All-CIF First Team defender chose the Wolf Pack, which will join the Mountain West Conference in 2012. The NCAA Division I school went 5-2 in its last year in the Western Athletic Conference and 7-6 overall.
Guendling is excited to work with longtime Nevada defensive line coach Ken Wilson and the rest of the coaching staff.
âI love the coaching staff,â Guendling said. âThe defensive line coach has been there for 20 years and itâs nice to know that he will be there for a long time. He is a great guy.â
Guendling cannot sign his official letter of intent until Feb. 1.
