RENO, Nev. â" The Las Vegas 51s survived an eighth inning surge by the Reno Aces to defeat Reno 5-4 Thursday night.
Las Vegas jumped ahead in the first inning, scoring four runs on Reno starting pitcher Charles Brewer. The 51s added a run in the third inning on an RBI bunt by third baseman Mike McCoy.
The Aces responded in the bottom of the third inning when third baseman Taylor Harbin scored on a fielder's choice.
Reno made the game close in the bottom of the eighth inning. First baseman Ryan Wheeler got the ball rolling â" hitting an RBI double. He scored on a fielder's choice when second baseman Rusty Ryal hit into a double play. Catcher Konrad Schmidt added another run on an RBI-single.
The rally, however, was not enough as the 51s held on to the victory. Brewer suffered the loss. Las Vegas reliever Bobby Korecky picked up his second win of the season.
