Fresno, Calif. - The Fresno Grizzlies could not contain the Las Vegas 51s offense for a third straight night as the home team lost 8-5 on Friday at Chukchansi Park in front of 10,017 fans. The 51s combined for 15 hits in the win, led by three different hitters with three hits.
The 51s wasted little time establishing a lead as six of their first seven batters of the game reached base and scored three runs. Chris Woodward drove in two of the three runs with a double.
Las Vegas added a run in the second inning with a sacrifice fly by Eric Thames that made it 4-0.
Grizzlies starting pitcher Clayton Tanner allowed the four early runs. The left-hander only lasted three innings, surrendering nine hits while striking out two and walking two in the loss.
The Grizzlies erased the four-run lead all in the bottom of the second when Brett Pill hit a leadoff home run and Ryan Lollis trumped Pill with a three-run shot to right field.
As quickly as Fresno answered Fresno's four runs, Las Vegas regained the lead in the following inning. Mike McCoy hit a two-run double with two outs in the third to give the 51s a 6-4 advantage. McCoy was thrown out on the play as he tried to advance to third base.
Mark Sobolewski provided insurance for Las Vegas when he hit a two-run home run in the seventh inning. It provided the 51s with their second four-run lead of the night.
Nick Noonan helped the Grizzlies chip away at the deficit with an RBI single in the seventh that plated Lollis. The run capped the Grizzlies' scoring for the night, however.
Noonan was the only Fresno hitter with multiple hits as he went 2-for-5 with an RBI.
Sean O'Sullivan earned the win for Las Vegas. The right-hander allowed four runs (three earned) on three hits in six innings.
Jerry Gil pitched a scoreless ninth to pick up his eighth save of the season, five of which have come against the Grizzlies.
Fresno lost their starting second baseman during the game when Charlie Culberson was pulled in the bottom of the fourth and replaced by Brock Bond. Culberson was traded to the Colorado Rockies in exchange for Marco Scutaro.
The Grizzlies will head to Colorado Springs to play a five-game series against the Sky Sox, the Colorado Rockies' Triple-A affiliate. Andrew Kown of Fresno will face Colorado Springs' Alex White in game one of the series.
