LAS VEGAS - The 2012 Summer Olympics in London are less than a month away. Las Vegas will be well represented as a couple of track and field stars with ties to UNLV will be competing in the games.
Khadevis Robinson and Amanda Bingson have punched their tickets to the summer games in London.
Robinson is an anomaly. He works full-time, trains and coaches at UNLV, yet still made the Olympic team.
"Eight hundred meters… for the individual that's going to make the Olympic team, they're just running. You can't have a job and then run, not at that level. You can do it and not run well," he said.
But, he did. Some may call the accomplishment remarkable, but not Robinson. "God doesn't make mistakes. He doesn't give you more then you can handle, so I have to. I signed up for this deal, so I have to follow through with it," he said.
Robinson has followed through, finishing in the top three in the 800 meters - the toughest run on the track. Qualifiers come from all over the world to run the 800 meter event. "It's tough, because it's the most international of events," he said.
Amanda Bingson has been throwing and dragging the hammer for three years, but it was her throw of more than 78 yards in Oregon that earned her a spot on the U.S. Olympic team.
Bingson was a long shot to make the games, but had a terrific U.S. qualifying day. The Silverado High School graduate is going to soak it all in right from the opening ceremonies.
"I know I'm going to cry," she said. "I know I'm going to cry, because it's such an overwhelming experience to actually be there."
She says she'll have to pinch herself when she arrives in July. Look for her when she tries to work her way closer to First Lady Michelle Obama.
"I will be there right next to Michelle. I'll be sitting right there next to her, waving to my mom, saying hi to Vegas," she said.
Hopefully, Bingson and Robinson will have medals draped over both their shoulders at the closing ceremonies.
