51s 8, Grizzlies 7
Another brutal outing: Fresno Grizzlies pitcher Matt Yourkin might no longer be hurt, but he's still hurting his team. Yourkin was reinstated from the disabled list Sunday and pitched for the first time in more than two weeks. The rust showed as Yourkin gave up five runs (four earned) in the eighth inning as the Grizzlies lost a two-run lead and fell 8-7 to the Las Vegas 51s before an announced crowd of 8,008. Yourkin (1-3, 8.01 ERA) has now blown three saves and allowed 22 runs in his past five outings combined.
Toughing it out: Sent down to Fresno on Saturday after spending the entire year with the San Francisco Giants, Brett Pill continues to shows he is unfazed by the demotion. Pill finished 2 for 4 for the second straight game. He added an RBI and a run.
The Christian way: Grizzlies outfielder Justin Christian hit his seventh homer of the season with a two-run shot in the fourth. Christian finished just 1 for 5 but still is hitting .364, which ranks third in the Pacific Coast League.
Vlad out: Former American League MVP Vladimir Guerrero, who has been working his way back to the majors and playing for Las Vegas, sat out Sunday after he was hit on the hand by a pitch. He is considered day-to-day. He is hitting just .214 with no homers in seven games in Triple-A.
Up next: The Grizzlies begin a crucial three-game series against the Sacramento River Cats at 7:05 p.m. today. Grizzlies RH Yusmeiro Petit (3-2, 3.21 ERA) is set to face River Cats RH Bruce Billings (4-1, 3.00). The Grizzlies, who have lost 5 of 8 during this 11-game homestand, no longer own the best record in Triple-A or the PCL. Instead, the Grizzlies (39-24) trail the River Cats (41-23) by 11/2 games in the PCL's Pacific Southern Division.
