51s 4, Grizzlies 2
That was unexpected: Fresno Grizzlies starting pitcher Eric Hacker had his worst outing in a month, giving up four runs in the fifth inning as the Las Vegas 51s won 4-2 Saturday at Chukchansi Park. It was the second most runs Hacker has allowed all season, as his ERA rose to 3.27. Hacker was cruising through the first four innings. Then he briefly lost his command and allowed three hits and two walks, hit a batter and committed a balk in the fateful fifth.
Vlad injured, leaves game: Former American League MVP Vladimir Guerrero was the man hit by Hacker in the fifth and left the game. Guerrero appeared to get hit on his left hand and immediately fell to the ground in pain. Guerrero, 37, has been trying to make his way back to the majors after signing a minor league contract with the Toronto Blue Jays last month.
Roster moves: In addition to losing the rehabbing Pablo Sandoval back to parent club San Francisco, the Grizzlies saw the Giants call up reliever George Kontos. He's the seventh Grizzlies player to reach the majors. This is Kontos' first stint with the Giants since he was acquired from the New York Yankees in a trade before the season. The 26-year-old Kontos was 2-0 with a 1.71 ERA and 26 strikeouts in 31-2/3 innings and had a 0.45 ERA in his past 13 appearances combined. Sent back to Fresno were infielder Brett Pill and reliever Steve Edlefsen. Grizzlies first baseman Todd Linden was placed on the temporary inactive list for the birth of a child.
Up next: The four-game series concludes today, with the first pitch at 2:05 p.m. Grizzlies RH Shawn Sanford (0-3, 4.50 ERA) will face 51s RH Scott Richmond (5-4, 5.84).
