USU Women's Basketball Has Winning Streak Halted by Fresno State, 90-67, Thursday - Utah State Aggies

LOGAN, Utah - Despite a season-high 22 points from junior guard Devyn Christensen, the Utah State women's basketball team had its six-game winning streak halted by a very tough Fresno State squad, 90-67, at the Dee Glen Smith Spectrum on Thursday.

With the loss, the Aggies fall to 11-6 overall and 2-1 in Western Athletic Conference action. The Bulldogs improve to 14-4 overall and 2-0 in league play. Fresno State improves to 13-2 against Utah State in 15 meetings.

For the second-straight game, Christensen scored at least 20 points. Senior forward Ashlee Brown was onepoint shy of her sixth double-double of the season with nine points and a game-high 11 rebounds. Sophomore guard Jennifer Schlott added 12 points, while senior guard Brooke Jackson scored 10 points, to go with three assists.

The Bulldogs had four players in double-digits, led by Taylor Thompson and Ki-Ki Taylor with 17 points apiece. Rosie Moult added 12 points to go with a team-leading 10 rebounds, while Blakely Goldberg tossed in 11 points.

Fresno State started strong, scoring six of its first 11 points in the paint. The Bulldogs are known to be tough from three-point range and took a 14-9 lead after Moore's first three of the game. Fresno State jumped out to a 21-13 lead after a trey by Thompson with just under 12 minutes left in the first half.

Utah State was cold from the field early in the game, starting the game shooting 27.8 percent (5-for-18).

The Aggies began to heat up using a 10-0 run to tie the game 25-25 with five minutes left in the half. The run extended to 12-0 after Brown nailed a lay up while falling as USU took its first lead of the game at 27-25 with 4:56 left in the half.

In the final four minutes of the half, the two teams traded leads with USU taking a 31-29 advantage after a Christensen lay up. The Bulldogs re-took the lead with 1:08 left on the clock after a three by Thompson.

In the first half, the Aggies were led by 11 points from Christensen. Despite a rough half shooting, Brown was dominating on the boards with eight rebounds, including six offensive boards.

Despite the slow start, Utah State went into the locker room trailing Fresno State by only one points, 34-33. There were five lead changes and five ties in the first half.

The Aggies were able to keep the Bulldogs' second leading scorer, Moult, to only two first-half points. Moore was Fresno State's top scorer in the first 20 minutes with 10 points and four rebounds.

Fresno State came out quickly in the second half, scoring the first seven points of the half to take a 40-33 advantage with a 18:46 remaining in the game. Moult's first three of the game put the Bulldogs up 43-33. The Bulldogs continued their spectacular second-half shooting in the second half to expand the lead and held on for the win.

USU ended the game 27-of-64 (42.2 percent) from the floor. The Aggies were 5-of-18 from three-point range (27.8 percent), while shooting 8-of-13 (61.5 percent) from the charity stripe. Fresno State was 38-of-74 (51.4 percent) from the field, making 8-of-21 threes (38.1 percent). The Bulldogs went 6-of-9 (66.7 percent) from the free throw line.

Utah State will play one more game at home on this home stand. The Aggies will take on Nevada on Saturday, Jan. 21 at 7 p.m. The Wolf Pack are well rested after the game against Idaho Thursday was postponed due to weather in the Pacific Northwest.
