By Alex Kosmach

Las Vegas Informer

The Las Vegas 51s professional baseball team signed a two-year Player Development Contract with the New York Mets on Wednesday. The 51s will be the new AAA affiliate of the Mets.

“We are excited to welcome the Mets as our new Triple-A affiliate,” 51s Executive Director Don Logan said. The Mets will be the 51s’ fourth major-league affiliate in the team’s 30-year history.

Las Vegas’s previous major league affiliate, the Toronto Blue Jays, announced today that they have signed a similar two-year contract with the AAA Buffalo (NY) Bisons.

“We are excited about our new partnership with the Las Vegas 51s and the city of Las Vegas, one which values equally player development, winning and community involvement,” Mets General Manager Sandy Alderson said.

The full press release from the Mets is below.

METS AND LAS VEGAS 51s SIGN PLAYER DEVELOPMENT CONTRACT

FLUSHING, N.Y., September 17, 2012 â€" The New York Mets today announced they have signed a two-year player development contract with the Las Vegas 51s, which will be the club’s new Triple-A affiliate.  The 51s play in the Pacific Coast League and have Cashman Field as their home stadium.

“We are excited about our new partnership with the Las Vegas 51s and the city of Las Vegas, one which values equally player development, winning and community involvement,” said Mets General Manager Sandy Alderson.

“We are familiar with many of the front office personnel with the Mets,” said 51s Executive Director Don Logan. “I’ve known Sandy Alderson for 20 years to go along with J.P. Ricciardi, Paul DePodesta, Dick Scott and Terry Collins.  These individuals are all very familiar with Las Vegas from the time they spent here with other organizations. We are excited to welcome the Mets as our new Triple-A affiliate.”

Brian Banks, who was wrongfully imprisoned for five years, is expected to sign with the Las Vegas Locomotives of the United Football League on Thursday.

Banks, 26, was a football sensation at his high school before he was arrested for a crime he did not commit at age 16. Before the charges, Banks was a star middle linebacker at Long Beach Polytechnic High School and was attracting interest from college football powerhouses. He verbally agreed to a full scholarship at USC.

Before he got a chance at pro football, a teenage girl he had known since childhood claimed he had raped her. He was arrested and, on advice of counsel, pleaded no contest to rape and an enhancement of kidnapping in order to avoid a possible life sentence if tried by a jury.

Banks watched from a prison cell as his teammates and classmates moved on from high school.

His dreams of playing football were dashed until the California Innocence Project, based in San Diego, took up his case to help him prove his innocence.

Banks was cleared of the charge on May 24.

Since his release, he has appeared on multiple talk shows and tried out for NFL teams. He will be speaking on Friday to the public about his new role in Las Vegas.

“This will be a vessel for me to gain experience while still pursuing the NFL and preparing myself for a possible mid-season pick up, or for next season,” Banks said on his Facebook page. “I’m excited to be a part of the team!”

Las Vegas 51s sign development deal with New York Mets - MyNews3

LAS VEGAS (Las Vegas Sun) -- When the Las Vegas 51s open the Triple-A baseball season next April, they’ll be affiliated with a new big-league team.

The franchise announced Monday a new two-year Player Development Contract with the New York Mets, ending a four-year run as the Toronto Blue Jays' top minor league team.

Toronto is expected to sign a two-year contract with the Buffalo Bison, which the Mets were affiliated with the past four seasons.

“We are looking forward to working with the New York Mets as our new affiliate,” 51s General Manager Chuck Johnson said in a statement. “The Mets will continue to provide quality players for us on the field that our fans will enjoy watching play. We are also excited to have the New York 'brand' in the Las Vegas market.

“From the 51s' perspective, nothing is going to change from our end,” Johnson continued. "We will continue to provide affordable family entertainment to go along with the promotional nights and the outstanding caliber of competition that typifies PCL baseball.”

The Mets will be the fourth organization to be affiliated with Las Vegas in the Triple-A franchise’s history.

From when the franchise debuted in 1983 until 2000, Las Vegas was the top farm team of the San Diego Padres in reaching the playoffs seven times. They were called the Las Vegas Stars when affiliated with San Diego.

From 2001 to 2008, Las Vegas switched affiliation to the Los Angeles Dodgers. They also dropped the Stars and became the Las Vegas 51s.

Next spring, prospects from a new organization will occupy the home dugout. The Mets, of the National League East, will likely appeal more to Las Vegans â€" several New Yorkers call Southern Nevada home â€" than the Blue Jays did the past four years.

“We are excited about our new partnership with the Las Vegas 51s and the city of Las Vegas, one which values equally player development, winning and community involvement,” Mets General Manager Sandy Alderson said in a statement.

With the 51s' home stadium of Cashman Field outdated and lacking amenities of other Triple-A facilities â€" players take batting practice in a small cage adjacent to the parking lot and there is a lack of proper rehabilitation equipment, among other shortcomings â€" aligning with Las Vegas comes with a risk.

“We understand with the lack of player amenities at Cashman Field and the proximity of Buffalo to Toronto (100 miles), it makes sense geographically to move to Buffalo,” Johnson said.

Buffalo finished with a 67-76 record last year, finishing last in the International League’s North Division.

UNLV Rebels Vs. Air Force Falcons 9/22/12 Mark’s Free College Football Pick Against the Spread

UNLV takes their shot at slowing the Air Force ground attack.

The UNLV Rebels host the Air Force Falcons in the MWC opener for both schools.

Air Force might be the sleeper in the Mountain West but could be in the middle of the standings but right now I have to see more of them before passing judgement. Through two games the Falcons have looked both good and bad at times with a 31-25 loss at Michigan displaying both. The defense gave up a 58 and 79 yard scoring runs which were plays that might have been the deciding factor. AFA totaled 417 yards with their signature ground attack plowing for 290 yards on 71 carries for a little better than four yard average with Cody Getz leading the charge with 130 yards on 26 carries with three trips to the end zone. The passing game was reasonably productive with Connor Dietz (10-19/127) missing on a few throws but the difference here was the Wolverines big play ability.

It looks as if 2012 will be another long year for UNLV football with the team off to an 0-3 start which is bad enough, but it has to be even more frustrating with all three defeats coming by just a single score. The Rebels gave Washington State a run for their money in 35-27 defeat but the Cougars had two scoring plays of more than 50 yards. The Rebels problem was an inability to run the ball with Tim Cornett (20-89) doing some damage but that was it with UNLV abandoning the run to play catch up. Nick Sherry (33-49/351) completed passes long, short and every thing in between with three scores and a pick with Marcus Sullivan grabbing six balls for 136 yards and a pair of TD's including a 75 yarder while 12 players made receptions.

Interesting match up and one wher I don't see the Air Force losing with their grinding run game. I think the Rebels are a decent home team and have a better offense than in past years so perhaps a cover is possible but not an upset...

Strip Scribbles: Cirque's 'Zarkana'; Las Vegas Sin tryouts; Criss Angel vs ... - Las Vegas Sun

Image

Cirque du Soleil

“Zarkana” by Cirque du Soleil.

Following up on my story about Cirque du Soleil’s incredible new show “Zarkana” moving to the Strip, it took 65 trailer trucks to load it out of its New York home at Radio City Music Hall. But it was completed in four days, ahead of schedule, and the fleet is on its way here. The first truck with cast costumes will arrive here today.

The loud-out of “Viva Elvis” at Aria is done, and “Zarkana” rigging has begun. I’m told that everybody involved is relieved that they’re on or ahead of schedule in the time-crunch swap. “Zarkana” previews start Nov. 1, and the show begins with the Nov. 11 premiere.

Having seen it in New York last month, I can say it’s a visually stunning, modern acrobatic spectacular combining rock, opera and circus arts. It’s played limited runs in the Kremlin theater in Moscow, Radio City and Spain’s Madrid Arena before the full-time residency here.

“Zarkana” is the story of a magician, Zark, who is on a quest to regain magical powers and find lost love. His journey starts in an abandoned theater of diverse, off-beat characters and incomparable world athletes; 75 artists transport audiences to a fantastical world trying to discover what is real and imaginary.

MAGICIANS CHALLENGE: Meantime, Cirque’s real magic show, “Believe,” at the Luxor with headliner Criss Angel, won a unique contest against Flamingo headliner and fellow magician Nathan Burton. The friendly rivals challenged each other on Criss’s Internet TV series “Uncensored,” which has racked up more than 300,000 viewers each episode. Criss and Nathan each took an equal amount of sleep-inducing medication to see who could stay away longer. At stake: The loser had to pay the winner $10,000.

Nathan told me: “We felt that this was a unique and incredibly difficult challenge. Criss has never taken any kind of sleep aid. I know how powerful they can be, so I thought for sure I would have an advantage. We wanted this to be a safe and legit challenge, so the competition took place at a prominent brain and spine surgeon’s office, Dr. Derek Duke. Under Dr. Duke’s supervision, Criss and I took the sleep enhancer.

“We then did various tasks to make staying awake difficult, such as laying down in completely pitch-black rooms and closing our eyes for long periods of time. Three hours into the challenge, while Criss and I were laying completely motionless, I dozed off for just a few seconds. Dr. Duke declared Criss the winner, and I will cough up the $10,000 for him to donate to his charity foundation!”

‘ILLUSIONISTS’ MEGA TOUR: Las Vegas-based magicians are winning raves on “The Illusionists” tour that had successful runs in Australia and Asia and has just wrapped in South America and Mexico. Jeff McBride, who hosts another of his four-hour Wonderground magic parties Thursday at the Olive in Henderson, stars on the tour as the Shaman.

Here’s a YouTube video of the sensational “Illusionists” show at Sheldon Adelson’s Marina Bay Sands Venetian in Singapore; it’s extraordinary success and incredible reactions there have prompted speculation about a move here.

LAS VEGAS SIN TRYOUTS: The Lingerie Football League’s Las Vegas Sin coach Jerome Captain is determined to have his team win it all this coming season. He sent me first photos of the practices and tryouts and added: “We are really building something special on the field already this season way before it starts.” The new coach plans to start mini-camp training next month after making final player selections but has the team practicing once weekly now with key returners Nikki Johnson, Cassandra Strickland and Danika Bruce.

Nikki won weekend raves from sportscasters across North America when she played for the Regina Rage and took out opponent Davine Burton of the new team the Toronto Triumph. In Nikki’s five games of the new Canada season before heading home here, she’s completed 41 of 73 passes for 384 yards, 12 touchdowns and 1 interception. She got the Sportscasters Salute of the Year with the play here in this YouTube video.

VINCE NEIL’S GRIT: Hometown rebel rocker Vince Neil is now in a walking boot to complete the remaining September dates of the Motley Crue and KISS tour. He had two broken bones in his left foot at the end of an Ohio concert and was examined in Toronto. Just one night after getting the boot cast in Toronto, he continued with his after-party plans and although limping even joined the Motley Crue cover band Crued for two songs.

BRRRRR: Husband-and-wife singers Clint Holmes and Kelly Clinton Holmes are braving the chill to fulfill a longtime dream of visiting Greenland and Reykjavik, Iceland. They’re taking a luxury cruise to the mountainous island nation located between Great Britain and North America after traveling to New England’s East Coast and past Northern Canada. Clint will entertain nightly while on the cruise.

TONIGHT’S TIPS
