Iowa Cubs
The Iowa Cubs split a double-header with the Las Vegas 51s (Blue Jays), winning the completion of yesterday's game 10-8 and dropping the regularly scheduled game 3-2.
In the first game, Casey Coleman started yesterday but exited after 1.2 innings with shoulder soreness. Coleman allowed no runs and two hits before exiting. He did not have a walk or a strikeout.
Esmailin Caridad was awarded the win then, even though he didn't pitch that well. Caridad pitched 2.1 innings and allowed two runs on five hits. He walked one and struck out one.
Jairo Asencio got the save. He threw 1.1 scoreless innings, allowing one walk but no hits. He did not have a strikeout. Asencio has two saves this year.
Iowa exploded for five runs in the top of the first, highlighted by first baseman Blake Lalli's two-run home run. Lalli now has seven home runs. He was 2 for 5 and scored twice.
Left fielder Dave Sappelt had a big game with two doubles and a triple in a 3 for 5 game. He scored twice and had one RBI.
Third baseman Greg Rohan was 3 for 5 with three RBI. He scored two runs. DH Jeff Frazier went 2 for 4. He had three RBI and scored once. Catcher Brian Esposito was 2 for 5.
In the second game, Frankie De La Cruz started and took the loss. He allowed three runs on five hits over five innings, including a two run home run in the first inning. He walked four and struck out seven.
Shortstop Alfredo Amezaga was 2 for 4 with a double and a stolen base in game two. He scored once and had one RBI. DH Blake Lalli was 2 for 4. Third baseman Diory Hernandez was 2 for 3 with a double.
Tennessee Smokies
For the second straight game, the Tennessee Smokies shut out the Huntsville Stars (Brewers), 4-0.
Yoannis Negrin pitched thirteen innings for three different Cubs affiliates last season. They loaned him out to the Mexican League in April and they just called him back now. He started his first game of the Smokies and was terrific. He allowed only one hit, a lead-off single in the fifth inning, whom he promptly erased in a double-play. Negrin walked one batter, so he faced only one batter over the minimum over five innings. He struck out four. Negrin also had an RBI double.
Frank Batista pitched a perfect 1.1 innings for his 21st save. Batista struck out two.
Third baseman Junior Lake was 2 for 4 with a double and an RBI.
Second baseman Logan Watkins was 1 for 2 with three walks. Watkins stole two bases and scored three of Tennessee's four runs. Left fielder Jae-Hoon Ha was 1 for 3 with two walks.
Daytona Cubs
For the second straight day, the Daytona Cubs and the Dunedin Blue Jays were rained out. Since this is the last time the Cubs were scheduled to play the Blue Jays, the games will not be made up. Since Dunedin won 14 out of the 16 games the two teams have played this season, perhaps this is not a bad thing for the Cubs
Peoria Chiefs
The Peoria Chiefs were bitten by the Beloit Snappers (Twins), 6-5.
Starling Peralta started and took the loss after giving up six runs over six innings. Three of the runs were unearned after a first-inning error by second baseman Zeke DeVoss. Peralta surrendered five hits and five walks. He struck out two.
DeVoss did have a good day at the plate as he went 2 for 4 with a walk and a stolen base. He scored one run and knocked two home.
Shortstop Wes Darvill was 2 for 3 with a walk. He scored two runs.
Boise Hawks
The Boise Hawks lost to the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes (Giants), 10-9.
Justin Amlung threw the first two innings and allowed a run on three hits. He struck out one and walked no one.
James Pugliese had a really crappy 20th birthday. He pitched 2.2 innings and allowed seven runs on eight hits. Two of the seven runs were unearned. He walked two and struck out one. His record dropped to 1-5.
Right fielder Xavier Batista hit two home runs tonight, a grand slam in the second inning and a solo shot in the sixth. Batista now has hit three home runs this season. Batista was 2 for 4.
Catcher Willson Contreras hit his third home run with a man on in the third inning. Contreras also doubled in a 2 for 4 game. He had four total RBI and he scored twice.
Second baseman Stephen Bruno was 3 for 5 and scored a run. Shortstop Marco Hernandez was 2 for 5, extending his hit streak to 17 games.
