Nevada to buy inmate shoes made by California cons - Sacramento Bee

CARSON CITY, Nev. -- Nevada inmates will soon be wearing shoes made by California cons.

The Nevada Board of Examiners on Tuesday approved a $200,000, two-year contract with California Prison Industries to supply shoes for Nevada inmates.

Department of Corrections officials say the agency had been buying sneakers for inmates from various vendors, costing about $9.00 a pair.

But at institutions where prisoners spend time outdoors in the exercise yards and basketball courts, the shoes fall apart in about two months - meaning they have to be replaced often.

Nevada corrections officials say the black and white sneakers made by California inmates are more durable and will hold up for six to nine months. And they only cost $4.25.

The Board of Examiners is comprised of the governor, secretary of state and attorney general.
