Police Describe Mayweather's Life Behind Bars - KLAS-TV

LAS VEGAS - Losing a fight in court, Floyd Mayweather, Jr. is boxed in - cornered in the Clark County Detention Center for assaulting his ex-girlfriend.

Metro Police produced a video Thursday describing the boxer's stay behind bars.

"Mr. Mayweather is a sentenced misdemeanant, but unfortunately with his status as a celebrity if you will, he's considered a high-profiled inmate," said Metro Police Deputy Chief John Donahue. "To ensure his safety, and really the safety of the other inmates, we have to go ahead and lock him down."

Mayweather's attorneys argued serving time behind bars could be a knockout to his boxing career. They blame lack of exercise and the food.

"We're required to have him a minimum of 2,800 calories per day. He is getting that. He is choosing not to eat all of his food. He's picking and choosing between cookies or some other snacks he has available to him. He's not eating the food that's being given to him," Donahue said.

Mayweather's attorneys petitioned a judge to allow the boxer to serve his sentence under house arrest. The judge denied the request Wednesday. ESPN Radio 1100 host Dave Cokin says his listeners have little sympathy for Mayweather.

"Jail is supposed to suck," he said. "If you're dehydrated, drink the water out of the tap. If you're not eating enough, eat more. It's not the Hilton okay?

Metro says Mayweather can exercise in his cell.

"He's choosing not to do that. He does get one hour of (recreation) yard a day. He can go out and shoot basketball if he wants to, or he can go and run around the (recreation) yard," Donahue said.

Mayweather isn't living the high life he's used to, but authorities assure the public the world-famous inmate has much more than a fighting chance surviving jail.

Mayweather agreed to a jailhouse interview with 8 News NOW June 1. At the last minute, he backed out. Tuesday, he again said he wanted to talk, but again changed his mind at the last minute. He has since denied 8 News NOW's requests for an interview.

A call Thursday to his attorney Richard Wright was not returned.
