Through two games the Falcons have looked both good and bad at times with a 31-25 loss at Michigan displaying both. The defense gave up a 58 and 79 yard scoring runs which were plays that might have been the deciding factor. AFA totaled 417 yards with their signature ground attack plowing for 290 yards on 71 carries for a little better than four yard average with Cody Getz leading the charge with 130 yards on 26 carries with three trips to the end zone. The passing game was reasonably productive with Connor Dietz (10-19/127) missing on a few throws but the difference here was the Wolverines big play ability.

It looks as if 2012 will be another long year for UNLV football with the team off to an 0-3 start which is bad enough, but it has to be even more frustrating with all three defeats coming by just a single score. The Rebels gave Washington State a run for their money in 35-27 defeat but the Cougars had two scoring plays of more than 50 yards. The Rebels problem was an inability to run the ball with Tim Cornett (20-89) doing some damage but that was it with UNLV abandoning the run to play catch up. Nick Sherry (33-49/351) completed passes long, short and every thing in between with three scores and a pick with Marcus Sullivan grabbing six balls for 136 yards and a pair of TD's including a 75 yarder while 12 players made receptions.

Interesting match up and one wher I don't see the Air Force losing with their grinding run game. I think the Rebels are a decent home team and have a better offense than in past years so perhaps a cover is possible but not an upset...

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3508836998493058352.post-37795747602282135582012-09-17T19:37:00.001-07:002012-09-17T19:37:25.037-07:00Mets' Triple-A affiliate moving to Las Vegas - New York Mets
Redirect Notice

The previous page is sending you to
http://newyork.mets.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20120917
.

If you do not want to visit that page, you can return to the previous page.

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3508836998493058352.post-49232983932968269832012-09-17T18:37:00.001-07:002012-09-17T18:37:24.919-07:00Las Vegas 51s enter into two-year development agreement with New York Mets - Las Vegas Sun

Leila Navidi

The Las Vegas 51s practice at Cashman Field in Las Vegas on Wednesday, April 4, 2012.

By Ray Brewer (contact)

Monday, Sept. 17, 2012 | 5:55 p.m.

When the Las Vegas 51s open the Triple-A baseball season next April, theyâll be affiliated with a new big-league team.

The franchise announced Monday a new two-year Player Development Contract with the New York Mets, ending a four-year run as the Toronto Blue Jays' top minor league team.

Toronto is expected to sign a two-year contract with the Buffalo Bison, which the Mets were affiliated with the past four seasons.

âWe are looking forward to working with the New York Mets as our new affiliate,â 51s General Manager Chuck Johnson said in a statement. âThe Mets will continue to provide quality players for us on the field that our fans will enjoy watching play. The first truck with cast costumes will arrive here today.

The loud-out of âViva Elvisâ at Aria is done, and âZarkanaâ rigging has begun. Iâm told that everybody involved is relieved that theyâre on or ahead of schedule in the time-crunch swap. âZarkanaâ previews start Nov. 1, and the show begins with the Nov. 11 premiere.

Having seen it in New York last month, I can say itâs a visually stunning, modern acrobatic spectacular combining rock, opera and circus arts. Itâs played limited runs in the Kremlin theater in Moscow, Radio City and Spainâs Madrid Arena before the full-time residency here.

âZarkanaâ is the story of a magician, Zark, who is on a quest to regain magical powers and find lost love. His journey starts in an abandoned theater of diverse, off-beat characters and incomparable world athletes; 75 artists transport audiences to a fantastical world trying to discover what is real and imaginary.

MAGICIANS CHALLENGE: Meantime, Cirqueâs real magic show, âBelieve,â at the Luxor with headliner Criss Angel, won a unique contest against Flamingo headliner and fellow magician Nathan Burton. The friendly rivals challenged each other on Crissâs Internet TV series âUncensored,â which has racked up more than 300,000 viewers each episode. Criss and Nathan each took an equal amount of sleep-inducing medication to see who could stay away longer. At stake: The loser had to pay the winner $10,000.

Nathan told me: âWe felt that this was a unique and incredibly difficult challenge. Criss has never taken any kind of sleep aid. I know how powerful they can be, so I thought for sure I would have an advantage. We wanted this to be a safe and legit challenge, so the competition took place at a prominent brain and spine surgeonâs office, Dr. Derek Duke. Under Dr. Dukeâs supervision, Criss and I took the sleep enhancer.

âWe then did various tasks to make staying awake difficult, such as laying down in completely pitch-black rooms and closing our eyes for long periods of time. Three hours into the challenge, while Criss and I were laying completely motionless, I dozed off for just a few seconds. Dr. Duke declared Criss the winner, and I will cough up the $10,000 for him to donate to his charity foundation!â

âILLUSIONISTSâ MEGA TOUR: Las Vegas-based magicians are winning raves on âThe Illusionistsâ tour that had successful runs in Australia and Asia and has just wrapped in South America and Mexico. Jeff McBride, who hosts another of his four-hour Wonderground magic parties Thursday at the Olive in Henderson, stars on the tour as the Shaman.

Hereâs a YouTube video of the sensational âIllusionistsâ show at Sheldon Adelsonâs Marina Bay Sands Venetian in Singapore; itâs extraordinary success and incredible reactions there have prompted speculation about a move here.

LAS VEGAS SIN TRYOUTS: The Lingerie Football Leagueâs Las Vegas Sin coach Jerome Captain is determined to have his team win it all this coming season. He sent me first photos of the practices and tryouts and added: âWe are really building something special on the field already this season way before it starts.â The new coach plans to start mini-camp training next month after making final player selections but has the team practicing once weekly now with key returners Nikki Johnson, Cassandra Strickland and Danika Bruce.

Nikki won weekend raves from sportscasters across North America when she played for the Regina Rage and took out opponent Davine Burton of the new team the Toronto Triumph. In Nikkiâs five games of the new Canada season before heading home here, sheâs completed 41 of 73 passes for 384 yards, 12 touchdowns and 1 interception. She got the Sportscasters Salute of the Year with the play here in this YouTube video.

VINCE NEILâS GRIT: Hometown rebel rocker Vince Neil is now in a walking boot to complete the remaining September dates of the Motley Crue and KISS tour. He had two broken bones in his left foot at the end of an Ohio concert and was examined in Toronto. Just one night after getting the boot cast in Toronto, he continued with his after-party plans and although limping even joined the Motley Crue cover band Crued for two songs.

BRRRRR: Husband-and-wife singers Clint Holmes and Kelly Clinton Holmes are braving the chill to fulfill a longtime dream of visiting Greenland and Reykjavik, Iceland. Theyâre taking a luxury cruise to the mountainous island nation located between Great Britain and North America after traveling to New Englandâs East Coast and past Northern Canada. Clint will entertain nightly while on the cruise.

TONIGHTâS TIPS

Itâs a regulars Monday night with Kelly Clintonâs open-mic night at Bootlegger Bistro.

Santa Fe and the Fat City Horns are at the Lounge in the Palms.

DJ Steve Aoki spins at XS in Steve Wynnâs Encore.

Hundreds of models invade Bare Pool Lounge at the Mirage for a champagne party with DJ Que.

TOMORROWâS TEASE

Burn the wedding dress! "We feel like we are letting people down, and we are absolutely ill about being where we are right now. We want people to be excited about us, but right now it's tough to do."

Where the Rebels are is 0-2 following a 2-11 record in 2010 and a 2-10 mark last season. This would seem to set up nicely for Washington State, coming off a scare against Eastern Washington at Martin Stadium Saturday.

But both of UNLV's losses have come on last-second field goals. Minnesota beat the Rebels in three overtimes with a 32-yarder, and Northern Arizona upended UNLV last week with a 33-yarder with 12 seconds to play.

"We just have to go back out there and go to work," said Hauck. "We got nearly a whole season left. I still think we've got the right stuff in our locker room and on our coaching staff. We just have to go out there and get it done."

UNLV has not had much success against members of the Pac-12 Conference and no luck at all against the Cougars, who are 5-0 against the Rebels.

Main question for the Cougars remains the status of quarterback Jeff Tuel, who was hit low in the fourth quarter against Eastern Washington, left the game and didn't return. Head coach Mike Leach refuses to comment on injuries, so Tuel's availability Saturday is unknown.

However, Tuel watched practice this week while wearing a knee brace as backup Connor Halliday took snaps with the first unit.

"Thought he's operated good, operated quick and thought he's done a lot of really good things from the neck up," Leach said of Halliday. "He's a guy that's really taken advantage of his time in the film room and practice, even though he started out without as many reps."

If Halliday starts Friday, it will be the second of his career.

Earlier this week, Leach punished his offensive lineman for a series of holding penalties and for allowing their fundamentals to break down against Eastern.

"We just had some bonehead dumb ones," said Leach, "that were off-the-charts dumb that we have to have better technique on."

While Hauck says the Rebels are "hard to love," Leach says he's impressed with what he's seen of UNLV, and adds that the Rebels team the Cougars will face Friday is far different from the one the Cougars crushed 59-7 last season in Pullman.

"They've got a lot of speed at key positions," said Leach. "Like us, they are still trying to harness things. They've lost two close ones and should have beaten a very athletic Minnesota team. This is a different team than last year, one that's much improved. I know they are disappointed with their results, but they've got some weapons."

WSU safety Deone Bucannon will not play in the first half against the Rebels. The Pac-12 suspended him as a result of an "unnecessary" hit he put on Eastern Washington receiver Greg Herd in the fourth quarter.

RIVALRY: Dates to Sept. 9, 1978, when WSU quarterback Jack Thompson completed 21 of 35 passes for 296 yards and three touchdowns in a 34-7 Cougar victory. WSU has won the four meeting since, including a 59-7 victory last season in Martin Stadium. The Cougars have played in Las Vegas once and left with a 40-13 win in 1991. Drew Bledsoe ran for two touchdowns and threw for one. Jason Hanson added an NCAA record 62-yard field goal in the fourth quarter.

WSU HEAD COACH: Mike Leach (85-43, 1-1 WSU):Hired Nov. 30, 2011 to replace Paul Wulff, who went 9-40 in four seasons, Leach in 10 seasons at Texas Tech (2000-09) earned 10 bowl bids. The Susanville, CA., native, who was raised in Cody, WY., recorded a school-record 84 victories. Leach's offenses led the nation in passing six times and three times accumulated the most total yards. In 2009, the Red Raiders finished second in passing offense and fourth in total offense, both marks tops among BCS conference schools. Prior to Texas Tech, Leach spent one season as the offensive coordinator at Oklahoma (1999). That year, the Sooners set six Big 12 and 17 school records.WSU STATS / NOTES

SEASON SUMMARY: Record: 1-1. Home: 1-0. Road: 0-1. Neutral: 0-0. Vs. Cougars"/>
Washington State is looking for a win against UNLV to go into Pac-12 play on the right foot. (Photo: Facebook / WSUCougarAthletics)

The Washington State Cougars (1-1, 0-0 Pac-12) will travel to Sam Boyd Stadium to take on the UNLV Rebels (0-2, 0-0 MWC) on Friday. The game will be broadcast live on ESPN at 9:00 p.m. ET and can also be watched via live stream online for free on WatchESPN and here.

Washington State routed UNLV last season in a 59-7 victory, outgaining the Rebels 612-158 in total yards, as UNLV's only score came on a kickoff return. Senior Marshall Lobbestael at the time threw for career highs of 361 yards and five touchdowns.

Like Us on Facebook :

The senior starting quarterback now, Jeff Tuel, however, may not play, after he left in the fourth quarter of last week's 24-20 win over FCS opponent Eastern Washington with an apparent right knee injury. But, according to The Spokesman-Review, while Tuel has done some throwing at practice this week, he hasn't taken any snaps with the first team.

Instead, he watched with a knee brace on as sophomore quarterback Connor Halliday took the reps. Halliday, who threw 100 passes late last year, could be effective in Tuel's place.

As for the Cougars' defense, which has seven starters back, junior safety Deone Bucannon will watch the first half of the game from the bench after the Pac-12 suspended him for a his late hit in the fourth quarter against Eastern Washington. The Cougars should be able to stop UNLV's running attack considering it only gave up 108 last Saturday. As a result, its pass defense without Bucannon, who has one of the team's two interceptions for the season thus far, will most likely be somewhat vulnerable.

UNLV, unlike Washington State, got upset last week by an FCS team in Northern Arizona. They can truly make a statement, though, by bouncing back with an upset against a BCS team when they host the Cougars.

Nevertheless, UNLV is still favored by many to lose, despite 12 starters back on both sides of the ball. They will probably have to step up their passing game and run defense to have a chance.

Freshman quarterback Nick Sherry only has 355 yards and one touchdown through the air with three interceptions in two games. He has struggled to complete half of his passes. The run defense allowed 209 yards in its first game of the season against the Minnesota Golden Gophers.

The running game, meanwhile, is fairly formidable for UNLV. The team gained 159 yards on the ground against Minnesota and then 189 against Northern Arizona.

For tips, thoughts and observations on all things sports, email us at tips [at] isportstimes.com

Check out more hot sports articles from iSports Times

© 2012 iSports Times All rights reserved. Since then, though, as speculation about the status of Washington State senior QB Jeff Tuel spreads, the Cougars have been bet down to -8.5, according to the NCAA lines at OddsShark.com.

"If the Cougars can shake off that lame Eastern Washington effort last week, this is a pot where they could win easily," said Jack Randall, a football handicapping analyst at OddsShark.com. "The matchup report gives most of the edges to WSU."

Wazzu, with seven starters back on both sides of the ball for its first season under new head coach Mike Leach, opened this season with a 30-6 loss at BYU.

Then last Saturday the Cougars picked up a 24-20 victory over FCS Eastern Washington. But while they won that game, the Cougs might have taken a hit with an apparent knee injury suffered by Tuel.

Not a lot is known about his situation, but as of Thursday afternoon, Tuel was listed as doubtful for Friday night's game. If he can't go Wazzu would probably start sophomore Connor Halliday, who threw 100 passes late last year, and fairly effectively, before suffering an injury to his liver. Ouch.

On the other side of this matchup, UNLV, with 12 starters back after going 2-10 last year, is off to a tough 0-2 start to this season. The Rebels opened with a 30-27 triple-overtime loss to Minnesota, then fell last Saturday to FCS Northern Arizona 17-14 on a field goal with 10 seconds left.

On the bright side, UNLV ran for 159 yards vs. the Gophers and 189 vs. the 'Jacks. On the other end of the stick, they allowed Minnesota to run for 209 yards, blew a 14-0 lead vs. NAU and have seen freshman QB Nick Sherry struggle to complete 50 percent of his passes.

These teams just met last year, with Washington State romping to a 59-7 victory in Pullman. The Cougars outgained the Rebels that day 612-158, as UNLV's only score came on a kickoff return.

Free Pick: Even if Tuel can't play, Halliday showed a little something in his limited playing time last year. Meanwhile, the Rebels are just not very good. So we'll give the points with Wazzu. This is the sixth meeting ever between the schools.

The Washington St Cougars and UNLV Rebels meet for the sixth time ever Friday night. Washington St has won all five previous meetings by at least 13 points, including a 59-7 rout last year in Pullman. This is only the second ever meeting in Las Vegas between the schools. The first meeting in Las Vegas was in 1991.

Washington St is coached by Mike Leach, in his first year with the Cougars. Washington St is 1-1 this season with a 30-6 loss at BYU and a 24-20 win at home against Eastern Washington. With Leachâs âAir Raidâ version of the spread offense, you would expect the Cougars to score more than 15 points a game and throw for more than 238 yards a game, but that is what they have done so far. Of course, he doesnât quite have the same talent in Pullman that he did as coach of Texas Tech a few seasons back, at least not yet. The running game is almost non-existent so far with 51.5 yards per game. Only four other teams in FBS football have rushed for less yards per game than the Cougars. On defense, Washington St is giving up 25 points a game which is 71st out of 124 teams. The Cougars are 0-2 ATS this season and the total is 0-1.

Washington St was a 12.5 point favorite last week at home against Eastern Washington. The Cougars and Eagles were tied at 14 early in the second quarter. WSU scored 10 points before the end of the half to take a 24-14 lead. Neither team scored until late in the fourth quarter when Eastern Washington pulled to within 24-20. The Eagles missed the extra point, and then attempted an on-side kick. Washington St recovered the kick, but were unable to run out the clock. The Eagles got the ball back with just under a minute and a half to go at their own 16. They drove all the way to the WSU 32 before time ran out.

The Cougars had 355 total yards including 247 passing yards. Quarterback jeff Tuel completed 20/26 passes for 171 yards and 2 touchdowns before leaving the game with a knee injury early in the fourth. He is questionable against UNLV. If he canât go it will be back-up Connor Halliday who starts at quarterback for the Cougars. Halliday was 5/11 passing with 76 yards and an interception. Running back Carl Winston had 12 carries for 67 yards and a touchdown. Receiver Gabe Marks had 3 carries for 77 yards. Isiah Myers had 6 catches for 58 yards and 2 touchdowns.

Eastern Washington gained 469 yards including 370 passing yards. Each team had two turnovers, and the two schools combined for 18 penalties for 168 yards.

UNLV is 0-2 this season under third year coach Bobby Hauck. The Rebels have only won 2 games in each of Hauckâs first two seasons. They have suffered two heartbreaking losses at home so far, including 30-27 to Minnesota in triple overtime and an inexcusable 17-14 loss to FCS school Northern Arizona last week. UNLV is 1-1 ATS and the total is 1-0 this season. The Rebels are averaging 177.5 passing yards and 174 rushing yards a game. UNLV is being outscored 23.5-20.5 so far this season.

UNLV opened as a 13.5 point favorite at home against Northern Arizona. The Rebels took a 14-0 halftime lead. Norhtern Arizona scored on a 75 yard punt return early in the third. The rebels drove down the field in the fourth but missed a 30 yard field goal. The Lumberjacks tied up the score on the next drive. Northern Arizona kicked a field goal to take a 17-14 lead with 12 seconds left. UNLV attempted a Hail Mary but it was incomplete. It was the first victory for the Lumberjacks over a FBS school since 1987.

UNLV had 428 total yards including 189 rushing yards. NAU had 288 total yards including 197 passing yards. The Rebels were 10/21 on third and fourth down conversions, while the Lumberjacks were 4/15. Neither team had a turnover. UNLV had 8 penalties for 78 yards, and Northern Arizona had 5 for 29. If you look at the numbers, UNLV should have won easily, but miscues such as the missed chip shot field goal and too many penalties doomed them.

Redshirt freshman quarterback Nick Sherry completed 16/29 passes for 239 yards. Running back Tim Cornett is almost the whole offense for UNLV. He had 25 carries for 141 yards and a 42 yard touchdown run, along with 2 catches for 26 yards. Bradley Randle also had a touchdown run along with 13 carries for 42 yards. The top receivers are Marcus Sullivan, Davante Davis, Anthony Williams and tight end Jake Phillips. However, Sherry has only thrown one touchdown pass in 2 games with 3 interceptions.

Washington St is 4-1 ATS in road games against teams with losing home records, 6-2 after failing to cover, and after a straight up win, 7-3 after allowing more than 280 passing yards, 3-7 after allowing less than 100 rushing yards and 5-13 in September games.

UNLV is 4-0 ATS in Friday games, 9-4 at home, 19-44-1 after a straight up loss, 2-5-1 in non-conference games, 4-10 after scoring 20 points or less, 10-30 after allowing less than 100 yards rushing, 1-3-1 in September, 1-5 after failing to cover, and overall.

Though UNLV is still 0-2 they are showing signs of life under Hauck. The Rebels are 6 points away from being 2-0. Clearly even a lower rung Pac 12 team like Washington St has more talent than the Rebels. I think even if Tuel canât go for the Cougars, it is asking a lot for UNLV to pull off the upset even at home. I like Washington St to cover the 10.5 point number.

Get Saturdayâs college football picks now. If they choose to vacate, the tenants have to give the visitors authority, the building's owner, one-year notice.

That brought a protest from Las Vegas Mayor Carolyn Goodman.

"I have not been included on any discussion on this," Goodman told the other directors.

Goodman then requested an abeyance. Las Vegas Councilman Steve Ross then moved to suspend the item for 60 days, a move that started a debate between its stakeholders.

Goodman expressed concern that tying up a 57-acre parcel in downtown Las Vegas when the area is in the midst of a revitalization may not be the most prudent move, and she called an extension "premature."

"We're at a critical point in this city," Goodman said.

She also said other developers from Northern California and overseas have expressed interest in the land.

Attorney Chris Kaempfer was present representing the prospective buyers.

"This has to be the first step. Without the first step, I don't know if Howard Hughes can go forward," Kaempfer told the board.

He then said a 60-day abeyance is past some of the transaction's deadlines.

Goodman responded: "I hear everything you're saying, I just need time. ... This is a huge commitment for the city."

Kaempfer, coming on stronger, said that in 60 days the Howard Hughes offer may not still be on the table.

While she said she's got nothing against baseball, Goodman didn't back down and made it clear she didn't want to act until she was sure the 51s are the best possible option for that space downtown.

Ross added: "We haven't been part of the conversation. You need to come visit and talk to us."

During the discussion, both Scott Adams, chief urban redevelopment officer for the city of Las Vegas, and Bill Arent, economic and urban development director for the city of Las Vegas, said 30 days is not a lot of time to review something of this magnitude and agreed 60 days is in the best interest of the city.

When it came time for their two cents, the other convention authority board members expressed their understanding of Goodman and Ross' positions, but said they felt 30 days was a more appropriate abeyance period.

"I'm not going to change my motion. I'm going to support my staff at the city of Las Vegas," Ross said.

The vote for a 60-day abeyance then split the 14-member board, with the city of Las Vegas representatives on one side and the other municipalities on the other.

Ross then moved for a 30-day abeyance, which was approved by all who voted.

Las Vegas Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Kristin McMillan abstained from the vote and the conversation, as Kevin Orrock, president of Summerlin and executive vice president of master-planned communities for the Howard Hughes Corp., is chairman of her board.

Contact reporter Laura Carroll at lcarroll@reviewjournal.com or 702-380-4588.

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3508836998493058352.post-14860004612718712572012-09-11T15:37:00.001-07:002012-09-11T15:37:23.524-07:00Washington State Vs. UNLV: Cougars Look To Keep Rebels Winless - SB Nation

Washington State Cougars safety Deone Bucannon has been suspended by the Pac-12 for the first half of the team's game against the UNLV Rebels on Friday, according to CougCenter.

Bucannon hit Eastern Washington's Greg Herd late and high as the receiver came across the middle on an overthrown pass and was penalized for on the field for a hit that was clearly uncalled for. After further video review by the NCAA--a required action for all defenseless opponent penalties that do not result in immediate disqualification--the Pac-12 handed down the half-game suspension.

Pac-12 commissioner, Larry Scott, spoke on the ruling:

"While Mr. Bucannon was penalized on the field, I have deemed it necessary to add a half-game suspension," said Scott. "This disciplinary action was part of our weekly review of all targeting and unnecessary roughness hits." "In order to appropriately protect our student-athletes, it is imperative that we monitor and when needed, act in situations where a blow to the head of a defenseless player was flagrant and/or unwarranted, especially in situations where the hit occurred well after the play was over" added Scott.

For a GIF of the hit and analysis by SB Nation's Brian Floyd, be sure to check out this article.

For more on the Washington State Cougars, join the discussion over at CougCenter. Mandatory Credit: Charles LeClaire-USPRESSWIRE

UPDATE: A clause in Aaituiâs contract allowed the Jets to release him with no injury settlement or responsibility.

It would be a safe guess that most fans never heard of Isaako Aaitui until last nightâs episode of Hard Knocks. Other may have heard rumblings about a young up and coming DT that was turning heads throughout camp. Then the hard to spell and harder to pronounce defensive tackle was released by the Phins in their cuts to 53. Last night we learned that the Dolphins defensive line coach, Kacey Rodgers would âhit the tableâ for this kid.

The Dolphins released Aaitui and for the first time we got to see the disappointment on his face after the final episode covered quite a bit of who he is. It was hard not to like what you saw. Jeff Ireland sat him down and told that yes, he indeed was being cut but that they wanted him on the practice squad. Ireland talked about having those âskill setsâ that make guys like Aaitui NFL football players.

Ireland explained the process that would unfold. He would be released, then have to clear waivers and then the team would bring him back to the practice squad. Before the episode ended, we learned that Aaitui was claimed by the Jets. Something we all already knew on Saturday. All of the above was the story we didnât know. We didnât know just how high he was on the Dolphins list and how close he came to making the final 53 man roster. Itâs those tough bottom decisions that can change the course of the future for a kid trying to break into the game and a team looking to hold on to players they think are not quite ready but show enough to believe in them.

For Aaitui, the road to NY was a short one and we learned yesterday that he was cut by the NY Jets. First thought was the Dolphins would bring him back in to the mix in Miami and someone was about to get bumped from the practice squad. A quick turnaround in NY for a guy who showed so much potential. As the title says, his story doesnât end happy with a return to Miami.

In is first practice with the Jets, Aaitui tore his ACL and MCL. The injury will sideline Aaitui for the year but the bigger question regards his future. With no NFL team to report to, his rehab is now his responsibility. Both financially and personally. With a young girlfriend at home and kids, his dream of playing football at this level may have come to a final conclusion in New York.

Accidents in the NFL happen all the time and one has to wonder what would happen if fate doesnât step in here and there. Would the injury still have occurred if he was kept in Miami? It really is not important or even relevant. But a young man is looking at a long road ahead of him after coming so close to realizing his dreams. One decision, one more tackle, one more player showing just a bit less and Isaako Aaitui may have remained in Miami. Thatâs how quickly things change and how a great story comes to a sad conclusion.

Good luck Aaitui, hopefully this wonât be the last anyone hears about you.

Don't forget to follow us on Twitter @PhinPhanatic and on FaceBook at PhinPhanatic.

Tags: Isaakok Aaitui, Miami Dolphins

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3508836998493058352.post-30742218626708073802012-09-04T15:37:00.001-07:002012-09-04T15:37:05.596-07:00Spartans Host Highlanders, Wolfpack This Weekend - SJSUSpartans.com
Redirect Notice

The previous page is sending you to
http://www.sjsuspartans.com/ViewArticle.dbml?DB_LANG=C
.

If you do not want to visit that page, you can return to the previous page.

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3508836998493058352.post-91566211823781670712012-08-30T00:37:00.001-07:002012-08-30T00:37:06.163-07:00Another poor start for Hultzen - TheNewsTribune.com
LAS VEGAS â" Danny Hultzen struggled for the second consecutive start as the Tacoma Rainiers lost to the Las Vegas 51s, 6-1, on Wednesday night.

Published: Aug. 30, 2012 at 12:05 a.m. PDT Updated: Aug. 30, 2012 at 12:15 a.m. PDT

LAS VEGAS â" Danny Hultzen struggled for the second consecutive start as the Tacoma Rainiers lost to the Las Vegas 51s, 6-1, on Wednesday night.

Hultzen, the No. 2 overall pick of the 2011 amateur draft who is considered the Seattle Marinersâ top pitching prospect, allowed six hits and six runs, walked five and struck out three before being pulled after 2 innings.

In his previous start, Friday at Cheney Stadium against the 51s, Hultzen didnât make it out of the first inning, walking four and allowing two hits and two runs while getting just two outs.

He is 1-4 with a 6.09 ERA for the Triple-A Rainiers. Both teams combined for 5 wins last year.

The Minnesota Golden Gophers and the UNLV Rebels meet for the first time ever Thursday night in Las Vegas in the season opener for both schools. This is the first game of a home and home series between the schools. Minnesota will host UNLV to open the 2013 season.

Minnesota finished 3-9 last year, the first under coach Jerry Kill. Minnesota started off 1-6 last season, with the only win coming against Miami-Ohio. They lost 19-17 at USC. Then came home losses to New Mexico St and FCS chamion North Dakota St. Kill had serious health concerns in those games as he had seizures on the sideline in both games. Minnesota played a lot better in the last half of the season with upsets over Iowa and Illinois, and narrow losses to Michigan St and Northwestern. Still, the Gophers finished 3-9 last season. They look to improve in Killâs second year, and hopefully his health issues are behind him.The Gophers were 7-5 ATS and the total was 5-7 last year.

UNLV is coached by Bobby Hauck, in his third year with the Rebels. UNLV has won 2 games in each of Hauckâs first season. The Rebels had home wins over Hawaii and Colorado St. Aside from a 7 point loss at New Mexico (the only win of the season for the Lobos) every other loss for the Rebels was by 17 or more points. After a 20 point upset against Hawaii, the Rebels lost at home to Southern Utah 41-17 the very next week. The highlight of the season, if you can call it that an call it that, was when UNLV hosted then #5 Boise St. The Rebels were only down 7 points at halftime, but were outscored 27-7 in the second half to make the final 48-21 Boise St.The Rebels were 3-8-1 ATS and the total was 6-5-1 last season

Minnesota quarterback MarQueis Grey was the leading passer and rusher for the Gophers last year. He passed for 1,495 yards with 8 touchdowns and 8 interceptions. He was more dangerous with his legs as he had 199 carries, 966 yards, and 6 touchdowns. Junior college transfer RB James Gillum will also get a lot of carries. Receiver Brandon Green has battled a gimpy knee throughout training camp but will play. He will be the go-to receiver for the Gophers. The Gophers only scored 18 points a game last year, so any improvement from that will be good.

The defense gave up almost 32 points a game last year. Senior Mike Rallis made 83 tackles last year, and now moves to middle linebacker. The secondary will be anchored by safety Brock Vereen, who played cornerback last year. Veteran corner Troy Stoudemire was granted an extra year of eligibility by the NCAA after he broke his arm last September. He is the Big Ten record holder for career kickoff return yards.Minnesota forced only 9 turnovers last year, which was last in FBS football.

UNLV scored only 17 points a game last season. Redshirt freshman Nick Sherry was named the starting quarterback over last yearâs starter Caleb Herring. The Rebels passed for 110 yards a game which was #118 out of 120 teams. Running backs Tim Cornett and Dionza Bradford combined for over 1,200 yards and 10 touchdowns.

The scoring defense was also #118 last year allowing 40.4 points a game. Junior cornerback Sidney Hodge is the only returning starter in the secondary.

Minnesota is 5-18 straight up in the last 23 and has lost 5 straight road games. Five of Minnesotaâs last six games have gone under the total. UNLV is 4-21 straight up in the last 25, and 0-5 against the spread. The over is 4-2 in the last 6 UNLV games.

These teams are both terrible on offense and defense. But a bad Big Ten team will always have more depth and talent than a terrible Mountain West team. Plus, plenty of Gopher fans are making the trip to Vegas. Lay the points with the Gophers.

Our college football betting picks will help you fill up your wallet. One roadblock for Sam Boyd Stadium was the outstanding money owned by the team to UNLV, who owns the stadium. UNLV reportedly wanted the Locos to pay for last year, as well as all of this year up front.

In speaking with Fassel, the team has secured a location for this season. If I were to speculate, I would bet the team plays at Sam Boyd Stadium. Cashman Field has not been used for football before, and if the Las Vegas 51s make it into the playoffs, their season could extend into the Locos first two home games.

As soon as the stadium is announced, the team will be able to start selling season tickets. This is where it becomes crunch time for the Locos. By the time the stadium is announced, there will be less than three weeks until opening kickoff.

Fassel understands the importance of bringing the fans back to the Locoâs games.

âThe fans that had season tickets are loyal to us,â Fassel explained. âAnd I want them back.â

According to Fassel he has a plan to reward past season ticket holder. He declined to comment on it until he is ready to start selling tickets.

As for the football side of things, the team has had two sets of tryouts already, one in Arizona and the other one in Las Vegas. Fassel stated that he has been keeping his eyes on the players he is interested in.

âWe track guys all the time, we know where they are, whoâs playing where,â Fassel remarked. âItâs no mystery. I have Randy Ball working full time on personnel.â

âI really like the lineup of our team,â added Fassel.

The date for players to report to camp has been pushed back from the August 23 date announced in the August 1 press conference. This gives them the opportunity to evaluate more talent as it is cut from the NFL rosters.

âBy September 2, they (the NFL) will have cut a thousand players,â noted Fassel.

This timeframe does cut into the leagues preparation time before the season kickoff.

âWe preferably would like to start a little bit earlier, but we are still dealing with some things,â Fassel stated. âBut in the NFL every year the players report 15 days before the first game. I know itâs a pre-season game but itâs a game.â

âSo you get about two weeks to get your team ready,â added Fassel.

Two veteran players will not be returning this year, Adam Bergen and Teddy Lehman. Both have pursued other careers.

The football side of the UFL has been its strong point. According to Fassel, âThe product on the field is outstanding. How does everyone look at this league? The product on the field is good, and marketing is not good.â

âWe need to do better at that (marketing),â Fassel remarked. âNow this year we are a late.â

According to Fassel, they are working on the marketing plan. He also hopes that people realize how supporting the Locos will support the local economy and that they (the Locos) are a successful franchise when judged by wins.

The Locos start the season with three consecutive home games, beginning on Wednesday, September 19.

Having home games so early is a mixed blessing.

âThe advantage of it (the three consecutive home games) is you are playing at home early,â Fassel reasoned. âYour odds of winning at home are better than they are on the road.â

âFrom a business standpoint, we are late getting everything out so it might hurt our crowds,â Fassel added. âComing down the stretch you have road games.â

The Las Vegas Locos have a lot of work that needs to be done prior to kickoff. Further updates will be published as they become available.

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3508836998493058352.post-51857725987888921622012-08-27T04:37:00.001-07:002012-08-27T04:37:05.011-07:00NCAA Football Preview - UNLV Rebels - NCAAfootball.net

By Gregg Xenakes, Associate College Football Editor

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. (Sports Network) - 2011 SEASON IN REVIEW: Now entering his third season with the UNLV Rebels, head coach Bobby Hauck probably thought he was stepping up to the big time in college football after leaving Montana in 2009, but the transition has been anything but smooth for him and the program.

In his final four seasons at Montana, Hauck posted a record of 51-6 and had his squad a perpetual threat in the Football Championship Subdivision playoffs, but those postseason appearances must seem like a lifetime ago after posting a combined 4-21 record with the Rebels and finishing in a tie for sixth place in the Mountain West Conference standings both years.

In 2011, UNLV opened with consecutive road games against Wisconsin and Washington State, outings that took the Rebels to new depths as they fell by a combined score of 110-24 as they surrendered an average of 554.5 ypg. Somehow the Rebels bounced back and doubled-up on Hawaii in the home opener (40-20), but that triumph was followed by three more defeats during which the team was outscored by a combined margin of 119-30, blanked by Nevada (37-0) during the annual battle for the Fremont Cannon and Silver State bragging rights. The Rebels did somehow squeeze out a 38-35 victory over Colorado State at home at the end of October to move to 2-5, but from there on out the squad tasted defeat one week after another.

In all but one contest, the meeting with New Mexico that ended in a 21-14 score, UNLV bowed by double digits, giving up huge numbers to Boise State (48 points), Air Force (45) and TCU (56) in the finale. Overall, the Rebels were just 2-10 and delivered a 1-6 mark in conference play.

The passing offense for UNLV left a lot to be desired as the squad ranked 118th out of 120 FBS programs with an average of just 109.6 ypg through the air. The rushing attack was much more respectable with 164.3 ypg, but overall the team still checked in with just 273.8 ypg which was last in the league and 117th nationally. UNLV did rank third in the MWC and 23rd in the country in kickoff returns with 23.7 yards per attempt, but much of that was a result of the squad scoring a pair of touchdowns in that manner.

2012 ANALYSIS:

OFFENSE: First and foremost for the offense of the Rebels, the teams brings back as many as five returning starters along the line to help control the action in the trenches. Granted, three of them (Cameron Jefferson, Robert Waterman and Brett Boyko) are only sophomores, but experience no matter what a player's age cannot be overstated. The right side of the line will be anchored by seniors Doug Zismann and Yusef Rodgers so that should be the least of the concerns for coach Hauck on that side of the ball.

The quarterback position could have a new wrinkle if Caleb Herring doesn't become more productive. One of the weakest passing offenses in all of college football a year ago, Herring converted just 54.9 percent of his attempts and recorded almost as many interceptions (6) as touchdowns (8). Pushing for playing time will be Nick Sherry who is a hulking figure at 6-feet-5 and 240 pounds, but his freshman status could keep him on the sidelines even if he does have the talent to take the field right now.

Running back Tim Cornett led the team a year ago in rushing with 671 yards and seven touchdowns, but the team also got some good news in August when Dionza Bradford returned to the squad after he left the team during the spring.

"It's good to have him back," Hauck said. "Dionza had some personal issues to deal with this spring and now he's working some things out. He has a ways to go but we're glad he's here."

Bradford was second with 615 yards on 133 carries for the Rebels in 2011.

A couple of youngsters are preparing to star at receiver for UNLV as sophomores Marcus Sullivan and Devante Davis found themselves at the top of the depth chart heading into preseason practice, which means there could be some growing pains for all involved in that area as well.

DEFENSE: One of the changes on the defensive side of the ball comes at the top as former defensive backs coach J.D. Williams was elevated to defensive coordinator. Williams has his work cut out for him, particularly along the defensive line as there are plenty of questions still to be answered.

The middle features some familiar bodies in Alex Klorman, Tyler Gaston and Trent Allmang-Wilder, but along the edges Jordan Sparkman could be someone to keep an eye on after being converted from tight end.

In the middle of the alignment, former junior college transfer and top returning tackler John Lotulelei will be looked to for leadership and guidance as he handles the weakside. Tani Maka is poised to resume action at middle linebacker, while the starting spot on the strongside has been a battle between Tim Hasson and Princeton Jackson, the latter being another juco transfer who happened to be an All-American at Blinn College.

The problem area for the group could well be in the secondary where there is just one returning starter. Junior Sidney Hodge has set the bar rather high for himself heading into this new campaign, having tied for fourth in the nation in fumble recoveries last year with 4.

SPECIAL TEAMS: Both kickers are back for the Rebels, with Nolan Kohorst handling the placekicking duties and Chase Lansford, the son of former NFL kicker Mike Lansford, taking care of punts. Lansford was used rather extensively in 2011, averaging more than six punts per game as he averaged 41.2 yards per attempt. Obviously the goal is to cut down the number of times Lansford trots out onto the field, but given the prospects of how the offense will operate, it doesn't look promising.

While Lansford was quite good sending the ball down the field, when it came to returning punts the Rebels were one of the weakest in the nation, averaging less than five yards per return. Had it not been for a long of 21 yards by Michael Johnson on one of his efforts, the numbers would look even more dismal.

OUTLOOK: The Rebels enjoy four straight home games to kick off the 2012 season and while that's certainly good news for coach Hauck as he tries to get the squad off on the right foot, it also means the team will be living on the road quite a bit over the final two months. Long-distance trips to Louisiana Tech and Hawaii bookend stops at Boise State and San Diego State which occur in back-to-back weeks in October, and because of those tough visits UNLV could easily find itself near the bottom of the conference standings yet again.

But aside from all that, the Rebels have to be particularly focused on the October portion of the schedule which lists the visit of rival Nevada to Sam Boyd Stadium. A victory may not be in the cards again this year for UNLV versus the Wolf Pack, but the Rebels at least have to show some signs of life in order to give the fans some optimism moving forward.

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0
